The Markets of Ibiza

One of the very first famous markets on the island of Ibiza, was a slave market.
After the the Catalan conquest of 1235, Ibiza's Arab population (ca. 2,200 individuals) couldn't flee and were stripped of their property and rights and could no longer own or rent properties, or run a business. These now Moorish 'slaves' were put to slaving for Ibiza's salt production or were auctioned on the local slave market of Ibiza Town, El mercado Antoni Amatllern.
During the 15th century the island of Ibiza was regularly invaded by pirates, involved in slave raiding to trade their human loot on the mainland. Although Spain abolished slavery in 1836 it was not until the early 1900's before the last (female) slave in Ibiza was freed.

On Ibiza, in the last century around 1930's - 40's, many of the islanders lived a harsh and poor life, and the only markets ('mercados' or 'mercadillos' in Spanish - 'mercats' in Catalan) of the island were places to trade agricultural products produced by small local farms, a site where the fishermen sold their fish and where artisans and craftsmen offered their products, such as wicker baskets, brushes and other domestic items and consumables.
With only a handful of cars and few motorbikes & bikes on the island in those days, the usual means of transportation were donkeys, mules and horses, preferably pulling a cart to carry the tradesmen and products from their inland farms to nearby villages or the market in Vila (Eivissa).

When, in the fifties the first freedom seekers and artists arrived on Ibiza, the islanders got acquainted with a more demanding and worldly public that brought their cars and motorbikes to the island and lived a bohemian lifestyle, unusual to the hardworking residents of the small and still 'undiscovered' Balearic island.
To supply all residents with fresh vegetables, fish and domestic necessities, every village and town had its open air market place and were happy to accommodate various vendors at regular markets.
From a religious past, each Patron Saint's Days of Ibiza's towns and villages is celebrated with a Holy Mass, a parade and a local market and party.

With the hippy invasion in the sixties, the islanders quickly got used to their revolutionary, outlandish but creative ideas to make a living and run small businesses, and allowed them to live in caves and beaches, on their land, even let them build their ecologically prescient 'fantasy' dwellings), or move into their empty, distant fincas, or even sold them to their new fellow-islanders.
In only a few decades the population of islanders grew from 'poor' farmers and 'travelling freethinkers' to economically wealthy investors that, under the guidance of worldly-wise hippies & India-goers, successfully started developing a one-of-a-kind holiday-island with a truly unique and repeatedly, groundbreaking nightlife.

In the mean time, supported by few locals, the island's alternative newcomers, not only taught the Ibicenc How-to-Party but they also founded two of the most successful and famous hippy markets on our planet, Las Dalias and Punta Arabi, where Flower Power lives, and rules on for ever.
Both colourful markets started off small scale, but with the help a group of visionary hippies, the cooperation of few locals and many artists, artisan, craftsmen, entertainers and musicians, they rapidly grew bigger and bigger, until unfortunately they became overly commercial, resulting in both colourful bohemian hippy markets being recognized as Ibiza's major tourist attractions of today.
The island of Ibiza has made an art form out of organizing markets and is home to all superlative of markets, and added some more.....

Over decades some Ibiza fashion brands that started off at Las Dalias, were recognized and became of world fame, such as the BSF fashion designs inspired by nature, created by Fashion Designer of Adlib style clothing for men, women and children, Beatrice San Francisco, the immensely popular colourful handcrafted bags, belt & boots of the World Family Ibiza, the hot, wild & special clothing brand Piratas de Ibiza
, established by the late German artist, decorator and artisan from the very beginning Sola Tidoo and the true hippy kit, flower crowns, headdresses & wreaths of Flores Elisa de Ibiza.

Lately the island is home to some, considerably smaller, markets, also designated by the name of 'hippy market', but many of the articles sold here are mostly NOT made on Ibiza, nor by Ibiza artisans and craftsmen, but nevertheless these markets are a good option for a pleasant trip with your family & friends.

To create their own craft markets platform, the artisans of Ibiza in 2009 founded the AAPLE - Association of the Artisans & Local Producers of Ibiza - and established the well-known artisan markets of Ibiza, where visitors can meet the local craftsmen on a regular basis, and admire and buy their art objects and handicrafts, handicrafts such as silver and leather crafts & ware, wicker baskets, jewelery, fashion accessories, hats, pottery, recycled materials, candles and perfumes and enjoy live music and buy fresh home grown vegetables and a variety of home made products.

Initiated because Ibiza's residents were in need of cultural meeting place and a place to trade second hand items, the island is now home to two reasonably prized, weekly flea markets or rastrillos, one on Saturdays at the Hippodrome of Sant Jordi and the other on Sundays at Cala Llenya, Sant Carlos. Vendors trade some of the most common things next to some extreme curiosa, while entertainers and musicians make sure nobody gets bored.

Over the last decades the island of Ibiza caters to crowds of holiday makers from May to October, so it is not surprising to find Summer markets in all island corners, from the promenades and market squares to beaches, countryside and pop-up markets, most of them starting late afternoon in the hot Summer, while in Winter, generally there are less markets and they start in the morning and run until around six.

Ibiza Town, has a covered daily fresh market in the 'Mercat Nou', Santa Eulalia has its Es Mercat, founded in 1985, offering a wide range of high quality fresh products like meat, fish, bread and vegetables and open all year round, from 8 am to 2 pm, closing only on Sundays, San Antonio also has an indoor-market and a daily outdoor vegetable market.
The island today is home to many and varying markets and fairs that are held outdoors.

The markets of Ibiza are the most popular social meeting place and gossip pond for the locals & vendors, while visitors and holiday makers enjoy strolling up and down the market stalls to see the knick-knacks, Ibiza style clothing, decorative pieces, handicrafts and 'jewellery' and sniff the international atmosphere.
Locals purchase their birthday presents and gifts on the markets, choosing from a variety of items ranging from art objects & crafts, artisan handicrafts, wicker baskets, Asian silver jewellery & batik, Ibiza clothing & fashion, herbs & spices, leather items & moccasins, natural cosmetics & treatments, musical instruments and lots and lots of curiosa & exotics.

With artisan markets, art markets, flea markets and fresh markets, hippy markets, a medieval market, musical markets, eccentric party markets, a local products market, Summer markets & Sunday markets you will always enjoy the perfect day out having fun with your family and friends, lots of eyeing not buying and the opportunity to meet some of the most colourful islanders and hippies.
